An informational Open House on the proposed Hawaiian cultural center in Wailuku, called “Hālau of ʻŌiwi Art,” will be held on Friday, May 20, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Maui Academy of Performing Art's Promenade Food Court located at 2050 Main Street in Wailuku.
A coalition of Maui Kumu Hula and the County of Maui has started planning for the Hālau of ʻŌiwi Art as a community space within the Wailuku Arts District, adjacent to the new parking structure currently under construction.
The facility could offer classrooms, studios, exhibit and events space; and it would be the first of its kind in any county to establish a permanent place for hula and associated ʻōiwi arts.
During the Open House, the public is invited to learn about the concept for Hālau of ʻŌiwi Art, as well as have an opportunity to share their ideas on the possibilities and potential for this center. Attendees will also enjoy music, food and interactive, informational tables on Wailuku’s up-and-coming Arts District, on-going construction, and sign-up to ride Da Bee. Admission is free.
